I introduced you to my mom last year when she guest posted, Financial Satisfaction; Now and Later. That article exemplified her positive attitude. Whatever is going on in her life, good, bad or otherwise, she sees the bright side. On top of that, if I want or need something from her, the answer is YES. She is chatty, helpful, and involved. When I was growing up she worked in real estate, raised my sis and me (with the help of my dad), and gave back to the community. There was always room at the table for one more!
Back in the day, she marched in Washington for civil rights and was a champion of the
underserved. Not one to hold back, I knew what she thought.
Here are some of MOM’s LIFE and MONEY LESSONS:
- You have a commitment to give back to society.
- When given a gift, write a thank you note.
- Save part of any money you get.
- Avoid paying retail.
- Buy a luxury used car and avoid the initial depreciation.
- Do not waste resources. (I still remember the cut up pieces of scrap paper used for phone messages)
- Enjoy life; go on a nice vacation or splurge once in awhile.
- Think about others’ feelings.
- Give to charity.
- Balance your checkbook.
- Focus on accomplishments.
- Clean your room and take out the trash (I had to throw those in
). - Compare prices.
- Use coupons.*
- Practice your religion.
- Buy the least expensive home in a good neighborhood.
- Shop smart (economically) to look well off.
- Get a college degree.
- Work hard.
- Use proper grammar.

What are your mom’s lessons?

Happy Mothers Day. I can tell you really treasure your mom. It’s something lacking today. Though some moms I know aren’t as great as yours. I’ll give you some credit too, because you were actually on the ball to pick up these wonderful lessons. Have a great day.

Hi Krantcents-It’s been suggested previously
At least with my mom! She’s the “go to” source for all of her associates and friends.
Your mom sounds great! I know it is going to sound weird but I don’t think I have ever had a conversation with my mom about money but talking to The Wife’s grandmother is an amazing woman to talk to about topics.
Funny she is still really bummed she bought US bonds instead of IBM stock (where she worked) in the 40s!

@Evan, Fascinating. As my parents had many financial struggles in their youth, money was never a taboo topic. In fact we talked about conservative money strategies a lot. Your grand ma inlaw sounds like quite a character
I love these – Focus on accomplishments and work hard. This pretty much sums it all up for me. I’ve always believed in ‘work hard’ as opposed to ‘hard work’. We see a lot of people saying the secret to success is hard work. Now, people unconsciously get the impression that they have to feel hard to know if they’re on the right track or not. Find what you love, what you’re passionate about, then work hard for it. That’s it!
