As I write this article (in mid July), I am starting week three without a permanent address. As the short sale purchase on our new home drags into it’s fourth month, we continue to live with my generous parents in their basement (WITH NO INTERNET). Our mail is being held at our old post office. A multitude

Moving to our new home soon
of prior habits and activities are upended as the majority of my work office is in storage at our new location with just bare bones belongings accompanying El Carino and me on our jouney. My portfolio management job is on hiatus and this blog site is being helped along by the generosity of many Yakezie personal finance guest contributors. Further, as the date of our move has yet to be finalized, I am honing my financial management and coping skills to a fine art.
Here are some maxims that are working for me during this uncertain transition.
- Make a list, or two or four. Remember where you put the list(s).
- Don’t call the mortgage broker more than
once perevery other day, things don’t change that often. In fact you can go three or four days without bugging him and it won’t make much difference. - Now is NOT the time to “negotiate” everything. The short sale process is so stressful, that be happy when something proceeds forward and don’t stress about the cost. (Note to self; we are paying for all minor repairs on short sale purchase because seller and/or bank aren’t going to pay).
- Realize that your personal control is minimal, so avoid jumping off a bridge; it will all be over eventually, and we will have saved a boatload of cash on our short sale condo purchase.
- Be honest while living with the folks so you don’t end up as a 15 year old version of yourself:) Don’t let feelings simmer, get them out!
- Enjoy living sans internet and remember what it’s like to read, play games, swim and function off line. Even talking with those around you can be fun!
- Remember, temporary discomfort is worth it for long term gain.
- Prioritize; what is the minimum you can do in order to keep your life going.
- Don’t forget about living life to the fullest no matter what!
- Save up a lot of money, because you are going to need it during this type of transition.
It’s amazing how much stuff can go by the wayside while life goes on.
Keeping reading for updates on my saga!

As you point out, control what you can rather than everything. Isn’t that a metaphor for life in general! This too will pass. Soon it will be over and this will just be a memory. You are doing great.

@Financial, Lydia, Harri, Krantcents, Thanks for sharing my journey with me and helping me to stay positive!!! I really value your comments.
Thanks for sharing these lessons Barb. We’ll do stage one of our move a week from today. My favourite lesson is the one about making lists. I have dozens of lists floating around. Where I completely fail is part II: remember where you put them.
Hang in there!

Keep shopping for a house because you might find something better. You can still turn it down after the bank approve.
Our short sale is almost done. We started in April and it took forever to go through. Good luck!!!

@Retire- Our short sale has been “almost done” for about the last month or so. I’m hanging on by a thread.
@Marie-I look forward to writing more about the ‘short sale” process. It is by far the most complicated and confusing real estate situation I’ve ever experienced.
Life without internet ain’t that bad. I’ve so far resisted putting in a dish at our weekend place. The boys and Mrs. 101 are agitating constantly, but I’m holding firm.

@101-I’m so impressed. I think it’s really a good mental strategy to have some time unwired!!! Unfortunately, left to my own devices, I ususlly cave in to the on line world

I am living vicariously through your continuing adventure. Best of luck in your plans. Continue to keep us posted.

I like your point about not reverting back to your 15-year-old self! I know I’d have trouble living with the parents and I can see myself reverting to my teenage years.
But hang in there, that short sale will eventually come through and think about all the money you can save in the meantime. Enjoy the rest of the summer unplugged.
