IS TWITTER A TIME WASTER?

 & LINKS

“As a break,” I head over to twitter to see what’s going on. I retweet a few tweets and click through on a few more. Before I know it, 20 minutes has elapsed. What I hoped to accomplish was 3 fold:

Is social media worth it?

1. Take a break from what I was doing.

2. Work on building my online presence.

3. Drive more folks to my blog.

Did I accomplish any of those goals? Well, I took a break; check. Did I improve my online presence or drive more people to visit my blog? I’m not sure. Although I get a fair amount of traffic referrals from twitter and retweets from fellow bloggers, “Is it worth the amount of time spent on the twitter site?” Although I measure twitter referrals to my site, I don’t keep track of the amount of time I spend on twitter. So it’s difficult to determine whether the amount of time spent on twitter improves my blog in a substantial way or not.

The question, “Is it worth the time spent?” could be elaborated to include almost anything we do. Is the time spent on any activity worth the reward. Now, with your paid employment, the answer is quite clear. You do your job in exchange for a paycheck. Hobbies and part time activities raise different questions. Did I have enough fun at the movies to justify the $14.00 ticket, or was the movie and money spent a waste?

While watching the Giants-49ers playoff game, I decided to check the #Giants twitter feed. My family asked why I was going online when we were all watching the game and cheering together. Actually, I don’t have an answer to that question. What is the sociological explanation for tweeting during a football game?

Back to the initial question, “Is Twitter a Time Waster?”  I learned from Optify that you can actually build a Twitter Strategy. Does this stuff really work? I copied this tweet from my twitter feed;

Look, I like social media as much as the next blogger, yet do the folks opting out of Facebook, twitter, and more social media sites have something here? Are they living life more fully? Is twitter an excuse to connect and build your web presence in an inauthentic way? Heck, I’ll take it one step further, is blogging a cop out from real human connection? During a recent viewing of the movie, Contagion, blogging was called “graffiti with punctuation.” I happen to appreciate the art in graffiti, yet some might take offense.

I don’t have the answer to any of these questions, but when I do, I’ll let you know. For now, on to some articles I’ve been reading online that won’t waste your time. Check them out!

Thanks for the links, I really appreciate it. Crazy how social media has become part of our everyday routine. I never thought I would want to know so many things all the time! I guess it keeps me young and hip! :)

I think social networking has pros and cons; lots of people spend way too many hours of their day playing Farmville for instance (I don’t, but every time I check out my family and friends on FB, they’re looking for a lost sheep, etc.)

However, it can be useful for building up traffic to a blog – and I think blogging can be viewed as a creative outlet for some. I’m even trying to motivate my students to write through blogging, so it can be said it’s educational!

Barb, I don’t tweet. I just can’t get past the name of the thing – makes me feel like I’d be a twit if I tweeted!!!

Thought provoking post, and thanks for the mention!

Even I don’t realize how fast the time passes once I sit down tweeting to friends. I wonder how life would become without these social networking sites!
    Thanks for the links.

I really don’t know anything about building a presence on Twitter (I have over 1,000 followers, but I don’t receive any traffic from the site), but I do feel that it can be a huge waste of time.

It can be a good source of information, consolidated by a hashtag, but I don’t find it extremely useful.

I think if you put a lot of time into Twitter you it can be beneficial, but if you only use it some times I think it is a time waster.

It seems that no matter how hard we try we can’t escape social media. If you don’t use it at home than you are using it at work.

Thanks for the inclusion. I am still trying to find balance myself. Good luck to both of us.

To all, I actually get a fair amount of referrals from twitter, but while tweeting, I am regularly second guessing my time utilization. Growing my readership is great, but how much intrinsic value is there in spending time on twitter?

    Thanks for the mention :)

I get sucked into twitter too- Some people I interact only with twitter and don’t usually read their blogs (and some people only interact with me on twitter and don’t visit my blog too)

I like interacting and getting to know people in 140 character increments.

    Hey Barb,

Thanks for plugging my eBook! To be honest I’m not great at Twitter and my Facebook page is very quiet, but it is a nice way to interact with other people (particularly other bloggers). I think tweeting in real-time makes it more personal somehow?

I think that the real cost of Twitter is that it puts you in a mode where you are jumping from one thing to another and not engaging in in-depth thought, which is what produces the gold.
