Save Money and Time With a Small Yard

Save Money with a Budget Renovation Project

Small economical garden

We just bought a condo with a small yard (Actually, we bought it last August). After living in homes with yards that need mowing, and paying someone for the task, I love our new set up. Although we like to save money, we’re even more thrilled with the time we recoup with a small yard.

The small area inspired me to do the entire landscaping project myself. I committed to a low maintenance and low water approach.

The soil was hard impenetrable, so I took the lazy way out and only planted a few plants in ground. I’d recommend renting a Hitachi if you want to dig the ground up a lot. I wasn’t that resourceful and just soaked the ground a lot over several days in order to get the plants in.

I bought native plants that didn’t need much water, and they are doing really well. The rest of the yard is populated with pots which are so easy to move around.

The nursery salesman tried to sell me some ground cover. But, I was too smart for that, so I splurged on large expensive Mexican river rock.

The final touch was hanging brightly colored plexiglass sheets on the fence, picked up on closeout at Block Buster.

The yard looks amazing and didn’t take much time or expense to put together!

Small Yard is Okay for Kids

Are you wondering where the kids will play? Lots of our neighbors have small kids and are doing great with the small yard. Some parents put in a bit of grass along with a plastic slide and water table. The older ones go to the park to play soccer or play on the monkey bars. And there’s a crew who are out in the parking lot most evenings riding their bikes and playing catch.

Don’t get caught up in the idea that you must have a big yard. Save t money and with a small and manageable plot of land.

In fact, I wish I’d bought a condo years ago!

Chime in; have you considered going for a small yard to save time and money? Or, are you compelled to have that expansive yard for the kids to play in?
